New Braunfels disposal guide
How to Get Rid of Junk in New Braunfels, TX
The City of New Braunfels collects household trash from your cart once a week. Furniture, mattresses and tires go to the free quarterly Bulky Goods Drop-Off, or out on a $43.30 curbside bulky pickup. Paint and chemicals go to the City's household hazardous waste drop-off events. Appliances, electronics, brush and remodel debris each have their own route. This guide covers where every common item goes.
Item by item
Where Each Type of Junk Goes in New Braunfels
Find the thing you are trying to get rid of, then follow the route. Rules change, so each card links to the office that sets them.
Furniture and Other Bulky Items
Couches, tables, dressers and other non-metal bulky items can go to the City's free Bulky Goods Drop-Off, held once a quarter. If you can't wait, the City will collect them from the curb for $43.30 a pickup. Request it online and the City calls you to schedule.
Mattresses and Box Springs
Bulky Goods Drop-Off days take mattresses at every site except the NBU Service Center. The landfill site may charge a mattress fee. To recycle instead, the City points residents to Texas Recycle Warehouse in San Marcos, which takes drop-offs and offers pickup.
Appliances
Appliances can't go in your cart, on a curbside bulky pickup or to a Bulky Goods Drop-Off. The City Recycle Center at 488 S. Castell Ave. takes appliances without Freon, water heaters, grills and other scrap metal free from New Braunfels residents. It doesn't accept refrigerators or AC units that still hold Freon.
TVs, Computers and Electronics
Electronics aren't allowed in your trash or recycling cart, and the City Recycle Center doesn't take them. The City holds one free electronics drop-off a year for city residents. The rest of the year, Texas law requires TV and computer makers to offer recycling, and TCEQ lists the free options.
Paint, Chemicals and Batteries
Paint, pool chemicals, pesticides, automotive fluids, propane cylinders, fluorescent bulbs and batteries go to the City's free household hazardous waste drop-off at City Hall, 550 Landa St. It runs on scheduled Saturday mornings for New Braunfels and Comal County residents.
Yard Waste and Brush
Green waste goes out on your recycling day in 30-gallon paper bags or tied bundles no longer than 4 feet and under 40 pounds, up to 20 per collection. A bigger brush pile can be collected for $43.30. The Comal County Recycling Center also takes brush for a fee by vehicle size.
Concrete, Lumber and Remodel Debris
Construction debris isn't allowed in your cart or at Bulky Goods Drop-Off. The City's own dumpster rentals are suspended, so roll-off dumpsters inside city limits come from the City's list of permitted private haulers. Mesquite Creek Landfill, 1700 Kohlenberg Rd, is the local landfill. Call it before you load.
Things Still Worth Using
Working appliances, furniture, doors and fixtures in good condition can go to the Comal County Habitat for Humanity ReStore at 1269 Industrial Dr. It doesn't take mattresses, dishwashers or gas appliances. Check its list before you load, or book a donation pickup online.
Tires
Tires can't go in your trash cart. Each household can bring up to four whole passenger car tires, without rims, to a Bulky Goods Drop-Off. Damaged and motorcycle tires aren't accepted there, so ask the landfill or a tire shop about those.
Bulky Goods Drop-Off
How New Braunfels' Free Bulky Goods Drop-Off Works
Bulky Goods Day is the cheapest way to clear large items in New Braunfels. It's free, it runs once a quarter on a Saturday morning, and each household gets one load per event. Sites have included City Hall, the NBU Service Center, Walnut Springs Elementary and Mesquite Creek Landfill.
See the City's Bulky Trash PageCount Your Items
Each household can bring up to five oversized items and four passenger car tires per event. A couch, a mattress, a box spring, a dresser and a recliner already make five, so plan the rest for the next quarter or the curbside pickup.
Leave Out What They Won't Take
Electronics, appliances, yard waste, hazardous waste, scrap metal, construction debris and business waste are all turned away. Each of those has its own route in this guide.
Bring ID and a Utility Bill
Bring a state-issued photo ID and a current utility bill. The last vehicle in line at closing time is the last one served, so get there early.
Take Trailers to the Landfill Site
Trailers aren't accepted at the City sites. Take a trailer load to the Mesquite Creek Landfill site, tarped. If you would rather not haul at all, the $43.30 curbside pickup needs everything at the curb with room for a truck with a lifting arm.

Self-hauling
Hauling Junk Yourself From New Braunfels
Secure the Load
Tarp and strap anything light, like cardboard, insulation, brush or bagged trash, before you leave the driveway. The City requires trailers to be tarped at the landfill site on Bulky Goods Day.
Separate Before You Load
Brush, scrap metal, recycling and trash all go to different places in New Braunfels. A mixed load may be refused. Sort at home, not at the gate.
Call the Facility First
Hours, accepted materials and fees change. Confirm with the landfill, the City Recycle Center or the Comal County Recycling Center before you go, especially for tires, appliances and brush.
Weigh the Real Cost
A self-haul often takes a borrowed or rented truck, several trips, loading time and a free weekend. For one load of brush that's fine. For a whole garage it adds up fast.
If hauling it yourself doesn't add up, tell us what needs to go and where it is on the property.
